Horticulture as Conservation
Nov 2, 2pm
Service Description
Join Jacob for a discussion on why we’re all doing it wrong as gardeners and why providing homes for plants and creating habitats for animals (and other plants) should be given a higher priority than aesthetics when planning and maintaining a landscape. In this class Jacob will discuss individual plant species for which we as gardeners are in a prime position to spearhead conservation efforts by propagating them and sharing them amongst ourselves, increasing their numbers as well as general awareness of their existence and innate awesomeness. You’ll also learn about individual plants and groups that provide valuable food and habitat for similarly imperiled or underappreciated animals. Jacob will talk about why the awareness of species may help with the efforts to conserve species in their native haunts but also examine the flip-side….that without political action that is almost assuredly not forthcoming without a groundswell of grassroots action, species across the spectrum will not have any of the haunts left before long; making these plant species available to gardeners and encouraging folks to plant them for their own sake and the sake of the species they support will allow each of us to make a personal stand against extinction of species by helping to create havens to buffer them.
